About the Opportunity
Our client is a leading global technology organisation with a major European research centre in Paris.
Their Optical Communication Technology team is conducting advanced research into next-generation optical devices and technologies for high-capacity communication networks.
To strengthen the research team, our client is looking for an Optical Device Researcher with a strong academic or industrial background in photonics, semiconductor devices, optical communications or related technologies.
This opportunity could suit either a recent PhD graduate with strong research achievements or someone with several years of relevant industry or postdoctoral experience.
Key Responsibilities
You will contribute to the research and development of next-generation optical devices and components for communication networks.
Your responsibilities will include:

Research, design and development of key optical chips and devices, including both active and passive components
-
Work on the design and packaging of optical components for communication systems
-
Develop technologies relating to lasers, modulators, photodetectors, waveguides and passive optical circuits
-
Participate in joint research and innovation projects with academic and industrial partners
-
Contribute to Proof-of-Concept and prototype development
-
Support the transition of successful prototypes towards product development
-
Perform modelling, simulation, testing and data analysis of optical devices
-
Contribute to optical device integration, packaging and testing activities
-
Participate in leading international academic and industry conferences
-
Publish and present research results in recognised journals and conferences such as OFC, ECOC, JLT and PTL
Candidate Profile
We are interested in candidates with a PhD in one of the following or a closely related field:
-
Photonics
-
Optics
-
Semiconductor Devices
-
Microelectronics
-
Optical Communications
-
Electrical / Electronic Engineering
Strong research publications or demonstrated technical achievements are highly desirable.
Candidates may come directly from academia or have additional postdoctoral or industrial experience.
Technical Experience
Strong experience in one or more of the following areas would be particularly relevant:

Optical chip and device design
-
Semiconductor lasers
-
Directly Modulated Lasers
-
External modulation technologies
-
Optical modulators
-
Photodetectors
-
Passive photonic circuits
-
Optical waveguide design
-
Semiconductor / photonic device fabrication
-
Optical device packaging
-
Optical device testing
-
Photonic integration
-
Optical coupling and waveguide coupling
-
High-speed optical devices
-
Optical transmission technologies
Experience taking an optical device from design through fabrication, packaging, testing or integration would be particularly valuable.
Additional Skills
Candidates should ideally have:

Knowledge of optical transmission systems
-
Programming experience, particularly Python, for modelling, data processing or test automation
-
Experience using optical / multiphysics simulation tools such as COMSOL or FimmProp
-
Strong analytical and research capabilities
-
Excellent written and spoken English
-
Good communication and presentation skills
-
Ability to collaborate effectively within an international research environment
