Battery Systems Thermal Engineer – Electric Vehicle Platforms
Position Overview
A leading engineering organization in the electric mobility sector is seeking a Battery Systems Thermal Engineer to drive the design and development of advanced thermal management systems for high-performance battery applications.
This role focuses on thermal system architecture, simulation, validation, and integration within complex battery systems. The position spans the full product lifecycle, from early concept through validation and production readiness, requiring close collaboration across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
Thermal System Design & Development
- Lead the design and development of battery thermal systems and sub-systems aligned with project timelines.
- Translate system-level battery requirements into detailed thermal sub-system and component specifications.
- Define thermal management strategies for lithium-based high-voltage battery systems.
Verification, Validation & Simulation
- Develop and support verification and validation strategies, including simulation and physical testing.
- Oversee testing activities from early prototypes through certification and production stages.
- Review thermal and fluid (hydraulic) simulation results and recommend design improvements.
Safety & Risk Management
- Contribute to the definition of technical and functional safety concepts for thermal systems.
- Conduct design reviews, DFMEA, and risk analyses.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.
Engineering Analysis & Continuous Improvement
- Perform root-cause analysis for thermal system and component-level issues.
- Drive continuous improvement of thermal system performance and reliability.
- Optimize thermal efficiency, durability, and integration within the overall battery system.
Documentation & Cross-Functional Support
- Review technical drawings and production documentation for thermal components and systems.
- Support assembly, testing, and validation teams during build and operational phases.
- Lead and contribute to technical discussions and decision-making processes.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Automotive, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering (or related field).
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in automotive systems or complex multidisciplinary engineering environments.
- Experience with high-voltage battery systems and lithium-based battery technologies.
- Understanding of systems engineering and requirements management tools (e.g., DOORS, JAMA).
- Familiarity with PLM systems and product lifecycle processes from R&D to production.
- Knowledge of thermal system design, manufacturing processes, and engineering best practices.
- Understanding of safety standards, regulatory requirements, and homologation processes for HV systems.
- Proficiency in standard office tools.
- Strong command of English (written and spoken).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in thermal system design and management for battery or automotive applications.
- Strong knowledge of battery cell behavior and thermal characteristics.
- Experience as a system owner for thermal components within battery systems.
- Familiarity with electro-mechanical system integration.
- Background in systems engineering and research-driven development.
- Experience working with automotive standards and regulatory frameworks.
- Ability to challenge assumptions and drive solutions using first-principles thinking.
